Intel, Xiaomi, Ninebot and Segway Team up to Create Hoverboard that Transforms Into a Robot

Tech giants Intel, Xiaomi, Ninebot and Segway have teamed up together to create an innovative Hoverboard that can transform into a personal robot.

Intel collaborated with Chinese company Huawei and Ninebot to create the Segway Hoverboard, a self-balancing personal transportation device. The technology was announced on Tuesday last week at CES 2016. It caught the attention of some tech enthusiasts because of its functionality, which can be operated by a touch button and transforms into a personal robot.

When a user hops off of the Hoverboard, the technology can shape-shift into a robot that will follow that person around and is capable of taking commands and pictures. In addition, the Hoverboard also has a built-in blinking camera eyes and a movable arms.

The Hoverboard robot was built on an open platform so that third-party developers will be able to create add-ons and new applications for the technology.

"We could make it a pure robot, or we could make it a hybrid of a Segway and a robot - and enrich it with intelligent elements", according to Segway.

There was a demo in CES 2016 of the robot's functionality. The robot was tested to adapt its arms and the robot replied with some tenderness, "Are those my arms?. " And also, once the robot is transformed, a robotic head springs will go up from a pole connected to the board. Segway explained that the Advanced Personal Robot is modular.

Segway reported that they are planning to make the Segway Robot commercially available in the near future, with a full developer kit to release later this year. The Hoverboard robot is the result of an ongoing development project.
