English Premier League club Arsenal FC is reportedly set to rival another England top flight giant, Liverpool FC, for the signature of Bayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernández this summer.

Reports were out that Reds boss Jürgen Klopp is planning a summer swoop on the 27-year-old Mexican as the team looks to add to its offensive weapons up front in Anfield. However, the Gunners are said to be keen on competing for Hernández's services as Arsene Wenger is also looking to improve his scoring options as well.

Arsenal has actually submitted a bid for the 5-foot-9 Guadalajara, Mexico native during the recently closed winter transfer window, but Bayer turned it down as they are said to be not yet ready "to sell their talisman" especially halfway through the current season, as reported by the Mirror.

Leverkusen is currently at the fifth spot of the 2015-2016 Bundesliga table with 32 points, one point behind fourth-running Schalke but 21 points clear off league leaders Bayern Munich.

With the failed deal, Wenger was left without a striker signing after January, which has drawn a lot of criticisms from both fans and analysts alike.

The Gunners and Reds will have a second chance at the end of the season and it surely looks like a tough bidding war for both English giants.

Meanwhile, Caught Offside indicated that Hernández had recently admitted that he has "unfinished finished" in the English top flight, which could be an indication of his desire to return in the Premier League.

The Mexico international had a previous long stint with Manchester United from 2010-2011 to 2015-2016. He suited up in six seasons for the Red Devils, with a brief loan spell to Real Madrid in 2014-2015, appearing in a total of 157 games and scoring 59 times in all competitions for the Old Trafford residents. He played 33 times for Los Blancos and had nine goals.

Hernández was just signed to a three-year contract by the German club in August of last year for a rumored fee of £7.3 million. He has so far played 26 games for Bayer and have scored an amazing 22 times in all competitions, which made him one of the most highly sought-after strikers this season.
