A Missouri lawmaker on Friday warned of increased civil unrest in Ferguson, Mo. if the case against police officer Darren Wilson does not go to court and if prosecution fails to obtain a conviction.

State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D-Mo.) has made no secret of her condemnation of the way Gov. Jay Nixon and local authorities have responded to the backlash after the Aug. 9 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

According to Fox News, the senator implied that the situation in Ferguson would depend whether or not an indictment and subsequent conviction would be reached.

There is sentiment among some people that Wilson won't be convicted, she said.

"If that happens, we're going to have exactly what you saw two weeks ago, with a lot of tear gas going all over the place," she added.

On Wednesday, the grand jury has opened the hearing of evidence on the case against Wilson. The hearing is expected to end by mid-October where the jury will decide whether to indict or not, according to prosecuting attorney Robert McCulloch.

Some reports claim that while an indictment may be imminent, obtaining a conviction may be harder.

A source cited by Fox News said Wilson had been assaulted before the gun had been fired. The source said Wilson, who was sporting a swollen face at the time, was taken to the hospital and was later found to have sustained a fractured eye socket.

Additionally, the source alleged the existence of "solid proof" of a struggle between Brown and Wilson for the police officer's firearm prior to the actual shooting that killed Brown.

Also, the grand jury hearing the case, which consists of three African-Americans and nine whites, under represents the victim's demographic, CNN reported.

Paul Brown, a law professor at Georgetown University, likewise said a conviction may be difficult since Wilson is a police officer, noting juries typically sympathize with police officers.

Meanwhile, Chappelle-Nadal continues to be highly critical of local authorities and took to Twitter last week to rage at Nixon in a series of profanity-laced tweets.

"You don't know s--- bc you never communicate. F--- you, Governor!" one tweet read.

She defended her tweets, arguing that she was entitled to a few "F-bombs here and there" after being tear-gassed while participating in a peaceful protest.

She added that while protesters were being tear-gassed, the governor was enjoying a concert at a state fair.
