(Photo : Google) Gamers now need to create a Gamers ID account to enjoy games on Google Play.

Gamers on the Android platform will be pleased to know that Google has released a new feature that will make it easier to track gaming achievements as well as create a permanent gaming persona.

A statement was posted on the official Android blog that reads, "Over the next few weeks we're rolling out Gamer IDs to Google Play Games. Gamer IDs give you the ability to create a gaming persona, so you too can embrace your inner gaming hero. You can customize a unique Gamer ID and select a Gamer Picture to create a whole new gaming identity."

Interested gamers who want to create their own Gamer ID need to sign into any part of the Google Play Games lineup. All a user has to do is create a unique Gaming ID and choose an avatar.

There are more than 40 avatars to choose from. Once a gamer has chosen a Gamer ID, he/she can join leaderboards and even play games across several platforms including the web and iOS.

Signing in to the Android Gamer ID is just a one-time procedure. After the first login, the ID will be permanently stored on the Android device, not unless the user logs out or removes the ID completely.

Google is undertaking a major overhaul of its Android gaming division, Google Play Games. With the recent update, users are no longer required to use a Google+ account in order to sign in. The recently launched Gamer ID works just like profiles in Xbox Live and the PlayStations' PSN online function.

The changes in Android Play Games will be slowly rolled out to worldwide users within the next couple of games. Google said that it is also working on transitioning existing games to the new Gamer ID system.
