Suzuki admitted that the game is still in its early stages of development. However, he admitted that he already has a vision of what the game will look like once it is finished. The screenshots Suzuki provided is a good enough hint that the game is well into its development and it teases fans about what the game will actually look like.
When Suzuki opened the "Shenmue 3" Kickstarter campaign, it immediately went on to break a couple of records. The campaign raised $1 million in less than two hours, setting a record for the fastest video game to raise that amount through crowdfunding. "Shenmue" eventual reached its funding goal of $2 million in under eight hours.
"Shenmue 3" eventually raised $6.3 million in funding from 69,000 backers. So far, the game holds the record for the most funded Kickstarter video game campaign and the sixth most funded campaign in Kickstarter history.
Along with a handful of in-game screenshots, Suzuki and his team also released a short video on YouTube. The video highlighted some indoor and outdoor scenes from the game.
"Shenmue 3" will be the third installment of the beloved video game franchise. The game will run on the Unreal Engine 4 and will most probably include a single-player campaign, just like its two predecessors.
"Shenmue 3" will be exclusively released for the PlayStation 4 and Windows PC platforms. The game is directed by franchise creator Yu Suzuki and development efforts are handled by YS Net and Shibuya Productions.
The game is expected to be released in December 2017.
