Amazon will be the new owner of game-focused video streaming website Twitch for US$970 million.

The announcement was made by Amazon after killing rumors Google would acquire Twitch for almost the same amount

There have been rumors published in The Wall Street Journal and The Information that Google-Twitch was a done deal.

Twitch said they chose Amazon over Google because Amazon shares the same values and long-term values.

The game streaming service company added that Amazon believes in their community. It said Amazon has a genuine interest in helping them achieve their shared vision faster.

"Amazon has the same deep, shared vision of where the games industry is going, and saw the same trends that we did. We saw a cultural fit between the two companies, and they saw what we were doing and wanted to help us do it faster," said Emmett Shear, Twitch CEO.

Shear said they are not focusing on the acquisition but rather on the satisfaction of their customers.

Now that Twitch is under Amazon, it can have an access to various streaming service needs.

Streaming quality won't be a problem along with the major lag problems. Analysts said the mobile app will definitely improve under new management.

Shear also announced that Twitch will remain an independent entity despite new ownership. This is something Google wouldn't have allowed.

Twitch was created in 2011 as the spinoff of the defunct Justin.TV.

Since then, it gained a massive audience and currently has more than 55 million monthly active users.

The company recently rolled out a copyrighted music service on its video-on-demand archives.

The deal between Amazon and Twitch will be sealed later this year.

Twitch primarily focuses on video gaming, including playthroughs of video games by users. It also broadcasts e-sports competitions. Content on the site can either be viewed live or on an on-demand basis.
