"The future of the EverQuest franchise as a whole is important to us here at Daybreak. EverQuest in all its forms is near and dear to our hearts. EverQuest and EverQuest II are going strong. Rest assured that our passion to grow the world of EverQuest remains undiminished," Daybreak Game said in a statement.
The announcement that the project has been cancelled is sad news not only for EverQuest fans, but also for the gaming community as a whole. The gaming industry has been hit by several hurdles over the past few weeks. Earlier this week, tech giant Microsoft announced that it is pulling the plug on the development of the free-to-play title Fable Legends. The announcement is considered by many tech experts as part of the bigger plan to shut down Lionhead Studios.
Some market experts believe that the free-to-play genre of video games is not as attractive for video game studios and developers as it once was.
In a separate message, Daybreak confirmed that the EverQuest Next Landmark project will continue. The voxel building MMO was announced back in 2013 and the company said that it should be ready for release this spring. EverQuest Next Landmark will be released after an extended period in Early Access.
Top Daybreak executives have assured fans that despite the recent cancellation of EverQuest Next, they will push forward with regards to other titles that are still in development. Daybreak also guaranteed fans that the EverQuest franchise will continue its saga and this will not be the end of the once mighty franchise.
