Microsoft has announced that it is rolling out a feature which will allow cross-network play for the Xbox One console. Microsoft has reportedly been working on the feature for quite some time now, and it is finally ready to be released. The cross-network play feature will allow Xbox One gamers to play the same game with gamers from other platforms like PC or PlayStation 4.

In a statement posted on Xbox Wire, ID@Xbox director Chris Charla wrote, "First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windwos 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well."
Microsoft said that game developers making games for the Xbox One console and Windows 10 platform should be able to get a hold of the feature first. On the other hand, for the feature to be fully compatible with the PlayStation 4 console and other platforms, Microsoft is encouraging companies like Sony to "participate" in order to make the project a reality.
One of the first video game title to support cross-network play will be "Rocket League," according to The Verge. Microsoft also said that it is open to teaming up with game developers and other hardware companies in order to make the feature available on as many platforms as possible.
Once the cross-network play feature is rolled out to "Rocket League," gamers playing the title on an Xbox console will be able to play against PC gamers. Microsoft said that it is not forcing gamers into adopting cross-network play and that the feature can be turned off if gamers do not want to use it.
The biggest question now is whether companies like Sony or Nintendo are willing to work with Microsoft to support cross-platform gameplay on the PlayStation 4 or Wii consoles. On the other hand, many tech analysts believe that the opinion of the gaming community could help convince these companies to support cross-platform.
