Microsoft is also reportedly planning for its upcoming major round of Windows 8 updates. It's said to be a follow-up to the Windows 8.1 update.

Windows 9 could see the return of the introductory iconic Start Menu that was previously eschewed in the Windows 8 panels design. The Charms bar will be removed along with several other UI changes.

Windows Phone's Cortana digital assistant will be included in Windows 9, as well.

Recent rumors suggest Microsoft is ready to debut Windows 8.2 or 9.

ZDNet said that a public preview of the Windows Threshold will be held but similar to public previews in the past. This time it still won't be complete with features.

The final product is expected to come in Spring of 2015. Microsoft added that Windows 9 will sport virtual desktops but it's still unclear if the changes will only apply to laptops and desktops, or to tablets as well.

Microsoft is expected to allow a new functionality of booting to traditional desktop instead of keeping the Metro UI intact.

Windows Phone 9 could experience a rising surge of Windows Phone smartphone numbers with people preferring Windows Phone 8.1 smartphones because of the OS upgrade.

HTC and other top manufacturers announcing standalone Windows Phone 8.1 devices are also expected to benefit.
