The Kansas City Royals gave Taiwan native Chien-Ming Wang his first start of spring training on Saturday against the Texas Rangers. The right-hander threw three innings, contributing two runs on four hits in a 13-6 loss at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX.

Wang quickly set aside any doubts concerning his rediscovered 95 mph velocity by striking out the first three batters he faced.
In the second inning, things got a bit rocky. Texas left fielder Ryan Rua capitalized on a throwing error by third baseman Whit Merrifield, advancing to second base. The next batter Justin Ruggiano drove in Rua with a single.
After a stolen base by Ruggiano, Wang then delivered the big blow, a 2-run homerun over the humorously close 272-foot short porch in right field. The Alamodome is normally used for football and basketball, hence the strange dimensions.
Wang got a groundout and a fly ball before surrendering a single to Pedro Ciriaco, who was promptly picked off by Royals catcher Salvador Perez.
In Wang's final inning of work, the Rangers were only able to muster a ground-ball single.
Royals manager Ned Yost praised Wang's performance. "I thought he threw the ball great. A little fly ball that would have been an out (in Kauffman Stadium) for a two-run homer, but he threw the ball fine," Yost said.
Despite Wang's solid performance, his future with the team is still questionable. Yost has not fully set his rotation and bullpen, so there are spots available.
The other option is to start Wang in the minor leagues. J.K. Ward at SB Nation says that while there is a slight chance that Wang makes the team, he will probably be sent to the Royals AAA team in Omaha to wait for an injury call up.
Even if Wang does start out in the minors, he has proven that he can be effective in the big leagues again. Not only did he strike out the side in the first, the sinker-baller also induced six groundouts, an aspect of his game that was integral to his early career success.
Based on his performance this spring, chances are high that Wang will play in an MLB game at some point during the 2016 season.
