Apple has unveiled its new creation of a robotic system that will rip the old iPhones for easier recycle.

The robot named Liam has been under development for around three years now and started to focus on iPhone 6 only. The company is planning to modify and expand the system to handle various devices and be able to get more resources. This move is an attempt to address the criticisms that Apple received regarding its products, which are made tightly making the components difficult to disassemble, refurbish and reuse.

Lisa Jackson, Apple’s SVP of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, has introduced Liam as part of the company’s larger initiative to be more environmentally friendly. It is also focusing its effort on using renewable energy. Liam would help in recycling materials back in the worldwide supply chain.

It highlights that Liam would be able to save cobalt and lithium from the battery, gold and copper from the camera, silver and platinum from the logic board and the aluminum enclosure, as well. The robot can also detect parts within device and strip them out safely and efficiently for proper refurbishing. It has also the tendency to pause and check the camera when being watched.

Apple can save money as well when using Liam because the company does not need to purchase additional expensive materials again. In this way, Liam becomes a mechanized version of metal recycling professionals working to scrape off gold and other precious metals from products that have been thrown away.

"Just like everything we do at Apple, when we think about the environment, we think about innovation. We want to change the world for the better. We think there's no better challenge in the world than our changing climate,” Jackson said.

The Liam system consists of 29 robotic modules on a single site near Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California. In addition, there is a program called Apple Renew where users can recycle devices for free in store or via the mail.
