The league's triple-double leader Russell Westbrook registered his 15th triple-double this season and the 34th in his seven-year NBA career. The five-time All-Star's statistical record is the most triple-double by a player in a season since 1988-89. Magic Johnson has made 17 and Michael Jordan registered 15.
"That's just a blessing," Westbrook, who earned his third straight triple-double in a row and the fourth in their past five games, said. "Especially getting mentioned with those guys. Those guys are Hall of Famers. My job is try to help us win games and try to win a championship."
Kevin Durant, who went 8 for 19 from the field, finished the game with 23 points and Dion Waiters added 17 points for the Thunder, who are on a five-game winning streak.
"It was the right read by both of our guys offensively, but it was a heck of a defensive play by Waiters to deflect the ball," Rockets coach J.B. Bickerstaff said.
The Rockets were leading 99-97 when Westbrook took over. On an inbound pass, he found Steven Adams who slammed the ball in; he got a steal and a dunk; then sank a long 2-point jumper to give Oklahoma City a 103-99 lead.
Harden retaliated with a trey with 13.8 ticks to go and cut the deficit to just one 108-107. A split on the free throws by Serge Ibaka gave the Thunder a two-point lead with 11.9 seconds remaining before Waiters stole the ball from Howard.
Harden had 24 points, a career-high 16 assists and seven boards for the Rockets. Howard had 16 points and 13 rebounds and Patrick Beverley contributed 16 points.
