The number of injured Chinese marathon runners involved was confirmed by the city's Health Department representative, who declined to comment about the situation but gave credit to the medical teams that helped the injured participants.
"If they performed 12,000 treatments in five hours, I think this is quite an accomplishment," the spokesperson said.
According to People's Daily, the streets of Qingyuan city were left littered with bitten grape-scented soaps. Reports claimed that some of the 200, 000 Chinese marathon runners were confused by the english-labeled packaging and mistakenly thought they were energy bars, according to Sports Illustrated.
The Chinese government decided to hold this yearly competition in hopes to achieve their goal in raising the country's sporting economy up to 15 times by 2025. Also in 2014, a total of 51 events were recorded, which was successfully raised to 134 in 2015, according to Time.
This annual event is made possible with the help of corporate sponsorship and local government that wants to give benefit to the cities that host this kind of event. In relation, experts think that the marathon helps with the official funding as well as earning tourist dollars for the chosen location in China.
