Redbox is now open again for business, but this time, it will challenge the popular movie streaming companies such Netflix and Amazon by developing another video streaming service called Redbox Digtial.
It is not the first time that Redbox has tried to introduce its own streaming service. In 2013, it teamed up with Verizon to create Redbox Instant, which offered access to thousands of movie and TV titles for $6 a month. But 18 months later, Redbox shuttered the service. But now, there will be a new service is going to be called Redbox Digital but does not confirm when the new service is going to be launched.

“Redbox continually looks for ways to enhance our customer experience. For tens of millions of consumers, Redbox is their source for new release rentals without a subscription. As such, we regularly conduct tests of potential new offerings, that may or may not be brought to market, as part of our ongoing commitment to provide additional value,” a Redbox spokesperson said in a statement.
Owned by Coinstar-parent Outerwall, Redbox is popularly known for its DVD rental kiosks in grocery and drug stores in the United States. The company says that it has rented 3 billion discs to date and nearly 68 percent of Americans live within a five-minute drive of a Redbox location.
Redbox Digital will offer immediate rentals right from a computer or TV screen for a slightly higher price. It is being built as a video-on-demand store similar to iTunes, Vudu or Google Play. Consumers will be able to rent movies or TV show episodes for streaming or purchase digital copies.
It suggests that it will have a tight integration with the existing Redbox service. Redbox users will find the digital content store as a tab on the Redbox website, next to existing tabs for movies and games. The service would also plug into Redbox’s existing loyalty program that would let consumers to earn points with every digital rental or purchase. There are plans to integrate the service directly into Redbox’s mobile apps, and extend support to TV-connected platforms like Chromecast and Roku.
