Several unconfirmed rumors have been making rounds online regarding the production status of Grand Theft Auto 6, the sequel to the highly popular and very successful video game franchise.

Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games is said to be working on which location the upcoming game will be set. There are some speculations that it will be set in Tokyo and that Rockstar has already sent a team to scout the location and do a research trip.

There have been talks in the gaming community for many years about a Grand Theft Auto game set in Tokyo. In fact, the rumor dates as far back as Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City. However, Rockstar Games has so far scrapped the idea of doing an game being in Tokyo for a variety of reasons.

One of the reasons why a Tokyo version of Grand Theft Auto was canned is apparently because of the city's sophisticated road system. Nonetheless, in 2003, reports surfaced that Take-Two Interactive had filed three trademarks back in December 2003. These are GTA: Tokyo, GTA:Bogota, and Grand Theft Auto: Sin City.

A source close to Rockstar Games told Tech Radar that the developer realized that it is difficult to move the setting of Grand Theft Auto outside of the United States. Moreover, should the franchise shift to other international locations, a handful of iconic themes will be left out just like brands of cars. The source added that preliminary development of Grand Theft Auto 6 have already started, although the exact location of the game had not yet been finalized.

The last game in the franchise Grand Theft Auto 5, was released in 2013, and is still enjoying a massive fan base. Some analysts claim that it is still too early for a new "GTA" game, especially when the last one is still one of the most popular video game title to date.
