Maria Sharpova and Simona Halep both won their second round matches and are eyeing their French Open rematch in the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open on Wednesday.

French Open champion Sharapova is through to the third round after defeating Alexandra Dulgheru in an extended three-set match that lasted two hours and 38 minutes.

Sharapova, 27, had trouble in the first set as she was broken by Dulgheru to take the set but the Russian quickly bounced back in the next two sets to win the match against the Romanian, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The fifth-seeded Sharapova was plagued with 46 unforced errors and 9 double faults but delivered in the end with 34 winners.

She now has a bigger match ahead as she goes up against German Sabine Lisicki in the third round.

"She's a great player," Sharapova said of Lisicki. "She's a very powerful, aggressive player. I expect a tough match from her."

The 22-year-old Halep walked through to the next round as she defeated Jana Cepelova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

The Romanian converted five services aces and 16 winners to end the match in 56 minutes.

Halep is handling the pressure of being second seeded quite well compared to other top ranking players.

"I think I handled it very well now," Halep said. "First round was tough because of the pressure but now I feel okay. I feel relaxed, more relaxed."

She is set to face qualifier Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia in the next round who defeated 25th seed Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in the first round.

Caroline Wozniacki is also through to the third round and will be facing German Andrea Petkovic. If the 10th seed Wonziacki wins against the 18th seed Petkovic and Sharapova defeats Lisicki, they will be battling it out against each other in the fourth round.
