Jacky Cheung Reveals Reason Of Not Working Anymore With Director Wong Kar-Wai

Thirty-year Veteran Hong Kong actor Jacky Cheung was invited to an open forum hosted by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts on Tuesday, March 29. Cheung revealed details of his life as a film actor and revealed that the most difficult director to work with is Wong Kar-wai.

The 54-year old actor shot to fame after starring in his first movie in 1986. The film introduced Cheung to his would-be wife actress May Lo and Director Wong Kar-Wai.

Cheung and Wong Kar-wai will eventually collaborate in three films: As Tears Go By, Days of Being Wild and Ashes of Time.

Cheung revealed that Wong Kar-Wai was very strict when it came to filming scenes, according to Jaynestars.

Cheung revealed that in one simple scene when all he needed was to look up from the floor, that simple expression took more than 60 takes. He said Wong Kar-Wai walked out of the set and left him in a very uncomfortable position.

"If our relationship was strictly director and actor, then I'd understand, but we were friends. I didn't understand why he treated me like that," said Cheung, who eventually stopped working with the director after the third movie.

Cheung claims that the most essential aspect of filming is the collaboration between directors, actors, cameramen and lighting since it is a group effort.

Movie critics compared Cheung's acting style to Robert DeNiro's performance in the 1973 movie Mean Streets.

However, Cheung claims to have never watched any of DeNiro's movies prior to filming his old movies. However, he highly praised the Hollywood actor as one of the established figures in the industry.
