The 39-year-old 2011 Australian Goldfields Open winner succeeded in claiming the last two frames to get the better of the 2012 Welsh Open qualifier Burns.

A break of 90 in the last frame got Bingham, who is set to defend his Crucible title next month, over the line setting up a showdown with his fellow Englishman 44-year-old Rod Lawler in the next round of the tournament.

"Ian's a tough opponent, I had to work really hard," Bingham, who was also the 2014 Shanghai Masters Champion, told worldsnooker.com. "I had four breaks over 50 so I'm pleased with the way I played."

"There are only a few top-16 players left but that shows how much class there is lower down the rankings," he added.

Meanwhile, in the other matches of the tourney, world No. 7 Judd Trump needed just 72 to defeat Jimmy Robertson with a 5-1 victory and reach the event's last 16. The Bristol cueman fired in breaks of 70, 97, 69 and 60 to outclass his opponent and set a meeting with world No. 15 Marco Fu of Hong Kong China.

Fu, who is best known for winning the 2007 Grand Prix, defeated world No. 22 Robert Milkins of England in a whitewashed 5-0 victory.

"The match (with Trump) will definitely be the toughest one so far," the 38-year-old Marco Fu said, "I'll prepare for that."

China's promising 15-year-old wild card Yuan Sijun ended his winning run by yielding to a 5-2 loss against former world champion Graeme Dott of Scotland, while world No. 24 David Gilbert won against Lee Walker with a 5-1 triumph.

John Higgins swept past Mark Joyce 5-1, but a third former world champion Shaun Murphy lost a 3-2 lead to bow out 5-3 against Mark King.
