GoPro has unveiled its Omni spherical virtual reality camera rig, capturing 360-degree spherical video and still images from various activities.

Omni was first announced at CES 2016. However, it will be demoed live for the first time at the NAB conference in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks, which is one of the biggest shows in video and multimedia content production.

Omni is a hollowed-out hexadecimal that uses six GoPro Hero4 Black Black cameras. GoPro says that it has developed special technology that allows for pixel-level synchronization between all six cameras. All the cameras are programmed to record in unison and the resulting picture produces a 360-degree video, which can be viewed and explored in virtual reality. Omni will not be able to record in 3D, but it will be able to synchronize the cameras at pixel-level. It is also designed to function with VR-video software Kolor.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but the Omni will cost likely lower than the $15,000 Odyssey unit that's designed to work with Google's Jump platform. The company has said that an all-in-one bundle with cables and cameras will be available as well as a rig only option.

GoPro itself has been promoting its GoPro Spherical solutions over the past year, too, with special channels dedicated to its GoPro VR kit on YouTube and more spherical video featured on its Facebook page, as well.

There are other start-ups that offer the same kind of device. It includes the $800 Bublcam, the upcoming $1,000 Vuze camera, the $500 Allie Home camera, Sphericam’s $3,000 second-generation 360 camera and Giroptic’s $500 360cam.
