According to Reuters. Lexmark has been looking for "strategic alternatives" sees the opportunity as promising. The sources added that the company has been venturing on separately, selling its software and hardware assets.
"The potential deal with Apex represents an opportunity for Lexmark to sell itself as a whole after an earlier auction did not produce satisfactory results," the Fortune reported.
Meanwhile, executives of Apex Technology are set to pay a visit to Lexington-based Lexmark this month to attempt to reach a deal.
The sources asked to remain anonymous because of the confidentiality of the negotiations and both companies have not arrived at an agreement yet. Lexmark and Apex both refused to comment.
Lexmark specializes in the fields of creating imaging systems and laser printers and toners. It also provides services such as business process management and manage print services across the world. It has a number of research and development centers and sales offices across the world.
The company has been aggressively buying software assets to boost its services. Last year, it acquired Kofax Ltd. for nearly $1 billion and Swedish firm ReadSoft for $251 million in 2014.
In October, Lexmark announced that it was exploring other alternatives including a sale. It even sought the expertise of the Goldman Sachs Group as an adviser.
On the other hand China-based Apex Technology began its business in 2004, manufacturing and marketing laserjet and inkjet cartridge chips.
