After its successful Polaroid 600 project, the Impossible Project is bringing a new instant camera called I-1.

The I-1 also looks like original Polaroid cameras in terms of design. It has a vaguely pyramid-shaped form factor and the film stays at the bottom, while its body is body tapering up to a pop-up reticle system that is used to compose shots. The I-1’s photos are analog to the core and have no tiny thermal printer inside.

The new camera has matte black finishing and minimal knobs and buttons. It features LED ring flash around the lens, and it can handle both the original Polaroid type 600 film and Impossible Project's reverse-engineered type 600 film.

There is a shutter button, a dial for exposure compensation, and a very approximate focus selector. Composition is achieved by putting the eye to a charmingly old-school square frame. The built-in ring flash uses an ambient light sensor and the focus distance to brighten up the subject.

Perhaps the best feature of the camera is the built-in Bluetooth that allows it to connect to a companion smartphone app which can change settings such as the aperture and shutter speed. It can override the intelligent flash’s automatic adjustments, and it can also be used as a remote shutter trigger.

The app will also make it easier to get more creative with instant photos, helping photographers to set up double exposures or artsy long exposure light streak shots. The camera is also rechargeable via USB, which the company says is more environmentally responsible.

The I-1 is set to launch in May 10 with a price tag of $300.
