The defending NBA champions Golden State Warriors successfully broke the long standing record of the 1995-1996 Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls for the team with the most number of regular season victories on Wednesday evening.

The Warriors made history after beating the Memphis Grizzlies 125-104 to register the franchise 73rd triumph and set a new record by becaming the very first club to claim the NBA's best-ever regular season with 73-9.

According to the Score, the Golden State basketball squad completed the season with a .890 winning percentage. They are six full games ahead of the next best club in the Western Conference, the San Antonio Spurs (67-15).

"It's a great way to finish off what was an amazing regular season," Kerr, who was also a part of the Bulls squad that held the record for 20 years, said. "I just told our guys I never in a million years would have guessed that that record would ever be broken. I thought it was like DiMaggio's hit streak, really. I was wrong, but I will say the same thing now that I said 20 years ago, 'I don't think this one will ever be broken.' Somebody's got to go 74-8. I don't see it, and I hope our fans aren't expecting that next year."

With a new record, the reigning MVP Stephen Curry also etched his name in the NBA's book of history. The league's leader in points per game achieved another shooting milestone by becoming the first ever NBA player to make 400 three-pointers in a season. Curry capped the regular season with a 402 total treys made.

The Warriors will still need 16 victories more for a widespread consideration as the best team ever. If they fail, it is not for lack of motivation.
