Apple may rebrand its operating system OS X to MacOS, aligning to its unified naming system in line with watchOS, tvOS, and iOS.

In March, the MacOS naming scheme was first discovered on the OS X 10.1.4 framework which further solidified people's previous speculations. The term MacOS has been used only by developers for convenience, but this is the first time that the company used the term themselves. This is being considered as the definite evidence that the name change is truly coming.

On an updated webpage where Apple shares its most recent environmental report, a Frequently Asked Questions section makes a mention of MacOS instead of OS X. Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller first hinted at this change last year at Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in an interview with John Gruber.

“To model customer use, we measure the power consumed by a product while it is running in a simulated scenario. Daily usage patterns are specific to each product and are a mixture of actual and modeled customer use data. Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for MacOS and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices,” the passage read.

Currently, OS X appears like an outdated brand compared to Apple’s other platforms. Similarly, keeping “ten” in the name suggests that OS X’s version number has been stuck for 15 years now. Adopting the naming scheme would make it easier for all consumers to understand that these products are from Apple and the function is still the same and becomes better.
Apple is expected to unveil the next version of its Mac operating system, OS X 10.12, at its 2016 WWDC, which will likely be held from June 13 to 17.
