Reigning world No. 10 and tourney's fourth seed Sindhu yielded for the second consecutive tournament to the current world No. 18 Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand, who defeated the 20-year-old Indian ace in their All England Open clash last March.

The 24-year-old Thai got the better of the two-time bronze medalist at the World Championships with two straight sets 21-17, 21-19, wrapping up the match in just 38 minutes.

While in the women's doubles event, the dynamic duo of Gutta and Ponnappa bowed down to the top seeded Chinese duo of Luo Ying and Luo Yu.

The Chinese pair closed out their quarterfinals match with a 21-11, 21-14 win, utilizing a quick 39 minutes only to advance to the semifinal round of the US$150,000 badminton tournament.

Men's singles seventh-seed Prannoy failed to advance to the next level of the competition after failing to overcome a tough task of beating the current top shuttler in the world. The 2016 Swiss Open conqueror capitulated to the incumbent world No. 1 Chen Long of China in a 10-21, 15-21 defeat.

In the other quarterfinal matches, women's singles top seed Li Xuerui of China successfully advanced to the semifinal stage after thrashing compatriot Bingjiao He in two straight sets 21-11, 21-6.

Men's singles newly promoted world No. 3 Lin Dan defeated fellow Chinese Guangzu Lu 21-14, 17-21, 21-12 and set a semis showdown with countryman Lin Guipu.

Mixed doubles top seeded Chinese duo Xu Chen and Ma Jin booked their semifinal meeting with the Malaysian pair of Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh following their 21-12, 21-13 win over fellow Chinese Huang Kaixiang and Huang Dongpin.
