US Open: Eugenie Bouchard Reaches Fourth Round for the First Time

Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard defeated Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova 6-2 7(7)-6(2) 6-4 and reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time in her career on Saturday night.

The seventh seeded Bouchard took the first set easily from the Czech but stumbled on the second set where she lost on a tie-break that took an hour and 10 minutes to finish.

Bouchard, 20, came back on the third set after Zahlavova-Strycova committed a double fault at 5-4 and served to win the set and the match.

Bouchard committed 39 unforced errors in the match, 21 of those came in the second set.

"I was disappointed in myself, not necessarily about going to a third, but by my level in the second," said Bouchard.

"I was surprised I could do so many unforced errors," Bouchard added.

Bouchard had a stellar year, making the semi-finals in the Australian Open for the first time but lost to eventual winner Li Na of China.

She also reached the semis of the French Open again losing to eventual champion Maria Sharapova and finally reached the finals of the Wimbledon Championships for the first time in her young career but eventually losing to Petra Kvitova in straight sets.

The Canadian will face Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in the fourth round who won against Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan.

If Bouchard wins against Makarova, she'll enter the quarter-finals and will go up against either Victoria Azarenka or Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunic, who earlier upset Wimbledon champion, Kvitova.

The two-time Australian Open champion, Azarenka is the runner-up of last year's finals who lost to five-time U.S. Open champ, Serena Williams.

Meantime, Maria Sharapova defeated German Sabine Lisicki in straight sets 6-2 6-4 and earned herself a fourth round match against Caroline Wozniacki, who won against another German 18th seed, Andrea Petkovic.
