Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors is the recipient of the Red Auerbach Trophy as the 2015-16 NBA Coach of the Year, the league announced on Tuesday.

Kerr, 50, guided the defending NBA champion squad to the best regular-season performance in the league's history; winning 73 games in 82 matches played. The Warriors broke the long standing record set by the 1995-96 Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls of 72 wins and ten losses. Kerr becomes the Warriors' first winner of this award since Don Nelson in the 1991-92 season.

Kerr received 64 first-place votes and 381 total points from a committee of 130 broadcasters and sportswriters throughout the United States and Canada. The former Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs player easily outpointed Portland Trail Blazers's Terry Stotts and Gregg Popovich of the Spurs.

Stotts, the former Milwaukee Bucks head coach from 2005-2007, received 37 first-place votes and 335 total points to finish second, while the five-time NBA champion coach Popovich ended third in the balloting results with 10 first-place votes and 166 total points.

As per the rules, the coaches were granted five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote.

Kerr, who suffered complications from two back surgeries, missed the first 43 games of the season, and the Warriors went 39-4 under the watch of assistant coach Luke Walton, who took over upon the absence of the official listed head coach.

In late January, Kerr returned to coaching as the Warriors registered 34-5 and broke several statistical NBA records. Aside from the most number of regular-season wins, the Golden State team established the record for single-season road victories of 34 wins and consecutive home regular-season wins (54, including 18 victories to finish last season).

Kerr became the first person in NBA history to be a part of 70-win teams as a player and head coach.
