Badminton News: Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia Beats Lin Dan of China, Sets Finals Showdown With Chen Long

Current world No. 2 and tournament's third seeded Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia got the better of the present world No. 3 and the event's second seed Lin Dan of China in their highly anticipated semifinal showdown at the ongoing Dong Feng Citroen Asia Badminton Championships in Wuhan, China on Saturday.

The Malaysian ace, who is a two-time Olympic silver medalist in the men's singles event, took the match with a 22-20, 15-21, 21-4 victory.

It was the 11th victory of Chong Wei against the five-time world champion and two-time Olympic Gold medalist Chinese badminton superstar in 36 meetings.

With the win, the 33-year-old five-time Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold champion booked a finals matchup against the reigning world No. 1 and top seed Chen Long of China on Sunday. Chen, who was a two-time world champion, defeated the event's fifth seed and fellow Chinese Tian Houwei in two straight sets 21-14, 21-16 in just 50 minutes.

Chong Wei is trying to reclaim the title he won in year 2006 against the two-time Singapore Open champion Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand.

Meanwhile, in the semifinal matches of the tournament, women's singles top seed Li Xuerei of China just took 40 minutes to beat the seventh seeded South Korean Sung Ji Hyun in two straight sets 22-20, 21-11 to advance to the final round of the continental badminton tournament.

Li will be facing compatriot Wang Yihan, who defeated the 26-year-old Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal in their semifinal clash 21-16, 21-14.

In other matches, mixed doubles top seed duo of Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei defeated the fourth seeded tandem of Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na of the South Korea and moved to the final round of the event. The top Chinese duplet needed just 48 minutes to topple the Koreans with a 21-19, 21-11 victory.
