"The Belt and Road Initiative, though initiated by China, is not only about China," Xi said. "I hope people in all countries along the Belt and Road will feel the benefit brought by the initiative."

China's Belt and Road Initiative,  which was proposed by the Chinese President in 2013, covers at least 4.4 billion people in more than 60 countries, which is about 63 percent of the world's population.

"While taking care of our own interests, we will give more consideration and care to the interests of other countries," the president said.

Xi emphasized that the global market will play a key role in ensuring the success of the novel initiative, as the Chinese Government, for its part, will ensure the project's overall coordination.

He also stressed the need for Chinese companies to be "law-abiding" and responsible entities, as they pursue their respective economic agendas.

Li Guoqiang, deputy director of the Institute of Chinese Borderland Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, explained that the study aims to learn from the experiences and failures of the ancient Silk Road, and consequently, enable leaders to develop innovate ways of implementing the China's Belt and Road Initiative.

According to Li, President Xi does not want China to focus on short-term success and quick profits, but instead take good consideration of the relations between interests, enterprises and local and central governments.

For his part, Zha Xiaogang, a researcher at the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, noted that looking after the welfare of other countries' vis-a-vis China's interest is crucial, particularly at this stage where an increasing number of foreign countries have decided to support China's Belt and Road Initiative.
