Ready Player One, the movie adaptation of a book by the same name by Ernest Cline, is one of award-winning director Steven Spielberg's upcoming movie projects. While it gives him the chance to return to the 80s, the director said that he would be refraining from including his famous works in the film.

The story of Ready Player One focuses on Wade Watts, a teenager who keeps to himself and spends his days in the virtual reality universe called the OASIS. In it, he tries to find the treasure that the deceased billionaire, James Donovan Halliday, created and sneakily hid in the virtual utopia for players to find.
The movie will have flashbacks to the 80s as in the book, Wade is obsessed with the said decade, just like Halliday. Wade is extremely fascinated about the 80s and knows everything from TV to movies, games to comic books, and music. This is why the movie seems to be the perfect avenue for Spielberg to relive his past achievements, as it was during this period that he really started to become a force in the industry.
Unfortunately, according to Den of Geek, Spielberg has already mentioned in a few interviews that he is detaching all of his works from the film. He said, "The movie won't have any of my films in it. I'm not putting myself in this movie...They reference so many '80s movies. I'm doing the whole pop culture thing. I'm just going to leave myself out of it. I can't do that. Too self-referential."
Meanwhile, Tye Sheridan, who landed the role of Wade, shared what his audition process was like for Ready Player One. He revealed that he already had a chemistry test with the female lead, Olivia Cooke, who is known for her role in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. He said that being able to talk to Spielberg is like being in "the best film school there is."
Other actors who have been confirmed to join the movie adaptation of the sci-fi, dystopian novel are Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow, Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento and Mark Rylance as James Donovan Halliday.
As for the release date, the Ready Player One movie was originally slated to premiere on Dec. 15, 2017. However, Disney moved Star Wars: Episode VIII from May 2017 to Dec. 15, 2017, which prompted Warner Bros. Pictures to push back Ready Player One to March 30, 2018, to avoid clashing with the monumental space opera franchise.
