With Cleveland's starting guard Kyrie Irving's three-pointer at 5:06 into the a third quarter of the game, the Cavs transcended the former postseason record of 21 points set by the Golden State Warriors on April 24.
"Tonight was a special night for all of us who played," four-time MVP LeBron James said. "This league has seen so many great teams, so many great players and great shooters and for us to set an all-time record is truly special."
The Cavaliers scored 25 of 45 shots from the three-point marker and had ten players make at least one trey in the entire duration of the game.
Led by starting shooting guard J.R. Smith's six 3-pointers, the gold and wine went 18 of 27 from beyond the arc in the first 24 minutes of the semifinals match. The Cavaliers exceeded the NBA mark for any half - regular or postseason - by knocking down 18 three-pointers in a half.
"When he's making shots, it's contagious," Cleveland's head coach Tyronn Lue said of Smith's superb shooting night. Smith went seven of 13 from the three-point area.
Cleveland made seven straight treys in the first 12 minutes of the game and continued their hot shooting in the second quarter by storming their opponent with another ten more triples.
The Dan Gilbert-owned basketball club spent the final few minutes chasing history. Reserve guard-forward Dahntay Jones nailed down the Cavalier's 24th trey with 2:24 minutes left to surpass the mark of 23 previously held by the Orlando Magic in 2009 and Houston Rockets in 2013. Backup guard Mo Williams added another three-pointer for good measure.
