A new Kickstarter campaign has launched the latest router called Portal claiming to solve modern Wi-Fi problems.
The new router comes from Ignition Labs, a technology company founded by a group of ex-Qualcomm engineers. Portal appears like high-end routers from Netgear, Asus, and others in terms of the surface area. It promises to turbocharge connectivity thanks to proprietary technology and an unused spectrum.

“We became frustrated that the industry wasn’t solving the real problems that were making Wi-Fi networks slower, less reliable and overly complicated. With billions of Wi-Fi devices competing for bandwidth, Wi-Fi has slowed to a crawl. So we started our own company to fix this problem—and Portal is our solution,” the company said in a demo.
Ignition says the Portal is different from other routers because it can operate on previously unavailable 5GHz spectrum. These special airwaves have previously only been accessible for radar purposes, and consumer routers have not been able to take advantage of them. It added that it avoids these congestion issues and provides faster throughput and greater range.
The Portal is also smart enough to hop between different 5Ghz channels if it detects things are getting crowded. It is clocked in 25 Mbps download speeds and 5 Mbps uploads, with a latency of around 3ms. It has high-powered, dual-band antennas, support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, beamforming, MIMO, and more. All of that is packed into a sleek, white box that does not have any external antennas or protrusions.
In addition, there are 10 radios supporting 802.11ac Wave-2, seven operating bands, Bluetooth Smart connectivity, four Ethernet LAN ports, an Ethernet WAN port, and two USB ports. Other features include intrusion detection, parental controls, guest access, dynamic traffic avoidance, and a one-touch setup process.
Ignition Labs hopes to raise $160,000 over the next 60 days and currently, it has 428 backers pledging $67,477. Interested buyers can get it starting at $139or more. The estimated delivery dates for early adopters range between July and September, depending on the investor’s location.
