Google has launched a new proposal detailing 13 new emojis that represent women in the world of work.
A team of four Google developers did a presentation to the Unicode Consortium, the body that approves and standardizes emoji. The proposal says that emoji displays a wide range of professions for women and men. It has a goal of highlighting the diversity of women's careers and empowering girls everywhere.

The emoji represent women in a range of fields including education, technology, industry, farming, food service, education, and music. The plan came after a 2015 AdWeek report that revealed 92 percent of online consumers use emoji. It found out that 78 percent of women in that group are frequent emoji users, compared to 60 percent of men.
“We recognize the importance of having an inclusive representation of all people in emoji, whether they identify with a specific gender or not. We believe an egalitarian, sensitive, and compelling representation of gender in emoji is extremely important,” the developers said in the statement.
In light of the United Nations' sustainable development agenda, which calls for greater gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, as well as the current news that United States will put famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman on the front of the $20 bill, Google believes that emoji is a gesture the tech world can make to portray women in a more accurate and positive light.
The next batch of emoji candidates is due to be released mid-year but it is unclear whether Google's designs will be approved in time to be included in this. The proposal is still very young, and there are chances that it will either go through significant changes or will not be approved.
