Former Indiana Pacers head coach Frank Vogel is one of the candidates to replace Scott Skiles as the Orlando Magic's chief bench tactician next season, according to team general manager Rob Hennigan.

ESPN reported Hennigan said on Friday that the 42-year-old Vogel, one of the youngest coaches in the NBA, "will be included in the 'wide net' cast for candidates" as Orlando continues its head coaching hunt this summer.

Skiles resigned on Wednesday of last week as the 12th head coach in team history, citing that he was "not the right head coach" for the squad after guiding them in the whole 82 games of the 2015-2016 season. Orlando ended up fifth in the Southeast division and missed the playoffs as they recorded a 35-47 slate.

Pacers president Larry Bird had announced earlier this month that the team is not going to extend Vogel's contract in the offseason, which gave the young coach a chance to accept offers from other squads at the moment.

Other teams which are also interested in Vogel's services are the Houston Rockets, New York Knicks, and Memphis Grizzlies, according to RealGM.

With regards to the other options for the Magic's head coaching position, Hennigan "stopped short of saying Vogel is Orlando's preferred candidate. He said that a defensive-minded coach will be their priority and a comprehensive coaching experience will not be a prerequisite.

"Sort of the fulcrum of what we're looking for is someone who puts an emphasis on the defensive end of the floor, someone who puts an emphasis on player development and also someone who puts an emphasis on building lasting connections with the players on our roster," said Hennigan.

The GM also noted that it is essential he "gets to know the candidates personally" as he wants to ensure that they understand the vision and values of the franchise before anyone could join them. He also wants the philosophical alignment between coach and executives to be seamless "as it relates to style of play and the type of character we want our team to exude on a daily basis".
