Google data centers are massive infrastructures situated in several locations around the world. Like most data centers, most of these Google facilities are fairly dull from the outside due to lack of aesthetics. This lack of external design is because what really matters is what is inside the building. However, Google has announced that it is grooming the exteriors of its data centers with a new campaign called Data Center Mural Project.

As of this writing, only two Google data centers have been groomed with colorful murals. These data centers are situated in Mayes County, Oklahoma, and Saint-Ghislain, Belgium.

The murals on the Mayes County data center was designed by artist Jenny Odell. The artist's mural is composed of various images taken from Google Maps' satellite footage. Odell said that the mural represents the modern flow of power, goods, and information, all of which usually run through data centers.

On the other hand, the mural in Saint-Ghislain was created by Oli-B. The street artist said that the inspiration for the mural was the cloud.

Google said that the murals were painted to visually communicate the function of data centers, which is used for hosting, securing, and distributing user information online.

In a statement, Google vice president for Data Centers Joe Kava said, "Few people know all this information flows through physical locations, called data centers. Because these buildings typically aren't much to look at, people usually don't, and rarely learn about the incredible structures and people who make so much of modern life possible."

Google said that its data centers located in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Dublin, Ireland would be the next to receive this aesthetic facelift. Kava added that the campaign would eventually be rolled out to all of Google's data centers around the globe.
