Democrat Chad Taylor Terminates Kansas Senatorial Campaign

Democratic candidate Chad Taylor announced that he is withdrawing his campaign for the U.S. senatorial race in Kansas.

Taylor sent a letter to the Kansas state secretary stating that he will be ending his campaign. He did not give any explanation the sudden decision, the Washington Post reported.

In a separate statement, the democratic candidate said he made the decision after meeting with his staff members and consulting Democratic Party leaders.

"Effective today, my campaign is terminated," Taylor said in the statement.

Initially, he used the term "suspended," but later on crossed it out and replaced the word with "terminated."

Former law professor and Republican state secretary Kris Koback said the state election laws dictate that a party has to choose a new candidate to fill in the vacated position.

Democratic party leaders in the state have yet to comment on their plans regarding the senatorial elections.

The senatorial race for the midterm election, was tagged a "complicated" campaign for having four candidates vying for the position. Before he withdrew his candidacy, Taylor was up against incumbent Republican Senator Pat Roberts, independent candidate Randall Baston and Olathe businessman Greg Orman.

In a poll conducted by the Democratic firm Public Policy, Taylor is behind Roberts in a head-to-head race. The survey also showed that among all four candidates, Orman is in the lead.

Prior to Taylor's Wednesday announcement, political scientist Burdett Loomis of the University of Kansas said Taylor had slim chances of being in the lead or being able to raise enough money to fund his campaign.

Robert's campaign manager, Leroy Towns, said Taylor's move was a "corrupt bargain" between Orman and the Democrats.

Because of Taylor's withdrawal from the race, Orman has established himself as Roberts' number one opponent for the midterm elections.
