Incoming Los Angeles Lakers head coach Luke Walton is reportedly pursuing Brian Shaw to be one of his assistants. However, he faces competition as new Indiana Pacers boss Nate McMillan is also after Shaw to be at his side next season.

Lakers Nation reported that despite Walton having to complete the postseason with the defending champions Golden State Warriors before he becomes fully at the helm of the Lakers bench, Mitch Kupchak and company "will not wait until he (Walton) is with the team to fill out his coaching staff".

The good news is Walton and Kupchak are both on the same page as to hiring former Laker player and assistant Brian Shaw as a part of his coaching crew next season. Shaw is said to be one of the names that Walton is set to hound this summer to sign up with him in LA.

Walton should not be worried about snagging Shaw until he is finished with the Warriors, but recent rumors have emerged that newly-minted Indiana Pacers head coach Nate McMillan is also chasing the former Denver Nuggets boss to be a part of his staff moving forward.

The report cited NBA.com's David Aldridge as the source of the speculations, saying that Shaw is also being wooed by new Pacers head coach Nate McMillan for a similar position" while the Lakers are trying to make the three-time NBA champion to be Walton's "proxy" in the upcoming draft.

The Lakers allegedly want Shaw to be Walton's lead assistant because the latter is still not experienced enough to be a head coach. The 36-year-old's 39-4 start, the second-best in league history, as the Warriors chief bench tactician at the beginning of the season was the only time he had fully handled a team as a head coach.

Meanwhile, SB Nation indicated that one hindrance to Shaw signing up with Walton's crew is Lakers "vice president Jim Buss' reticence to have too many former Phil Jackson disciples with the team".
