Google announced at its annual I/O conference that it is pushing an initiative to finally make conventional passwords a thing of the past, at least on the Android operating system. Instead, the tech giant will replace passwords with what it called "trust scores," something that incorporates different type of data about a specific user to determine whether they are legitimate or not.

Google calls this newest initiative Trust API, and the tech giant claims that it is the product of about a year spent working and studying how passwords work. Google said that it is rolling out this new API to "several very large" financial institutions within the coming weeks.
Trust API started out as Project Abacus and was introduced by Google at last year's I/O conference, according to Tech Crunch.
During his keynote at the I/O conference, Google Advance Technologies and Projects head Dan Kaufmann said, "Assuming it goes well, this should become available to every Android developer around the world by the end of the year."
According to The Verge, the trust score Google is trying to develop relies on user-specific data points. A set of data which could include facial recognition, current location, and typing patters. A user's trust score will vary depending on the type of app it is being applied to. For example, a banking app might need a higher trust score than social networking apps like Instagram.
Google said that Trust API will always run as a background process. The API will be responsible for monitoring sensors and information to create a reliable trust score for specific apps. Tech analysts liken the Trust API's algorithm to a sort of confidence level that continues to grow.
Although the mainstream release of Trust API, in part, relies on whether the bank trials will be successful, many tech analysts have said that Google is up to something promising.
