The fiber optic cable named MAREA (Spanish for "tide") will have eight pair strands. Telefonica SA, the Spanish Internet carrier, and the tech companies will join forces to create the massive cable across the Atlantic.
Christian Belady, Microsoft's general manger for Data Center Strategy, said that the company improve construct network stability and expand to areas where cables are difficult to reach.
"We were looking for other places. You want to make sure you have multiple paths. You can't survive on one cable, or frankly two." Belady said.
The companies have not disclosed any information regarding the amount needed to fund the project. However, TeleGeography's Research Director Mr. Alan Mauldin stated that $200 million or more is the required amount for trans-Atlantic cable installations.
In addition, Facebook and Microsoft will also require consent for the installation and approval from security agencies that will consider it as part of their infrastructure.
Telxius, Telefonica's infrastructure company, will manage the high-speed data link once the project is complete. The design will be handled and controlled by Facebook and Microsoft. Overall, each company will play a big role because of their focused fiber optic line, and will have the opportunity to upgrade their systems once new and advanced hardware is accessible.
