Tennis News: Chinese Pair Zheng Saisai and Xu Yifan Advance to the Next Round of 2016 Roland Garros

(Photo : gettyimages.com) Zheng Saisai and Xu Yifan have advanced to the next stage of the 2016 French Open.

Chinese tennis duo Zheng Saisai and Xu Yifan successfully won their second round match against Sabine Lisicki and Andrea Petkovic of Germany to advance to the next stage of the ongoing 2016 French Open at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris on Friday.

Zheng and Xu, who were the ninth-seeded pair of the tournament, were coming from an impressive victory over American Varvara Lepchenko and fellow Chinese Han Xinyun in the first round in a 6-4, 6-4 straight two-set victory. According to Xinhua, the Chinese duo got the better of the German pair by winning two sets to one 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

The 22-year-old Zheng is currently ranked as the women's doubles world No. 21 and her 27-year-old tennis partner Xu is the world No. 23 in the same category. While the 28-year-old Petkovic is ranked 156th and Lisicki, 26, is the 161st in the rankings.

Meanwhile, after having success in winning against Pole Alicja Rosolska and Nicole Melichar of the United States in the opening round of the world's premier clay court tennis championship event, the Chinese tandem Liang Chen and Wang Yafan failed to advance to the next level of the competition. The Chinese pair lost against the combinations of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In the first round of the mixed doubles event, the combination of China's Xu Yifan and Marin Draganja of Croatia eased past the French pair Alize Lim and Paul-Henri Mathieu in two straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to move to the next round of the Paris-based Grand Slam event. Americans CoCo Vandeweghe and Bob Bryan defeated France's Virginie Razzano and Vincent Millot 6-3, 7-5.

The French Open is often referred to as Roland Garros. It is a major tennis event and the second of the four annual Grand Slam tournaments.  It has q prize money of US$16, 474,735.00 and it will run from May 22 to June 5.
