(Photo : REUTERS) Soldiers from Lagos, part of an expected 1,000 reinforcements sent to Adamawa state to fight Boko Haram Islamists, walk near trucks. Boko Haram is said to be growing in number as they recruit more members from villages they have seized.

Bodies of dead civilians remain scattered on the streets of Bama after Boko Haram members seized the northern Nigerian town, according to a lawmaker.

Two days after the mass killing, people still have not buried the dead bodies yet because Boko Haram fighters are still patrolling the streets of the said town.

Bama was said to be a key town that Boko Haram wanted to take over since it will control Nigeria's north-eastern Borno state.

The state government on Wednesday denied that their town had fallen in the hands of the militants despite the killings. Officials said over 26,000 citizens were evacuated from the area.

Witnesses said government forces defended them but the militant group returned the next day with more support.

Also, the Nigeria Security Network (NSN) released a statement saying the Boko Haram made "lightning territorial gains" which they fear would lead to a situation similar to that in Syria and Iraq.

A senator in Borno, Mr Zanna, also released a statement saying the humanitarian situation in Bama was "terrible" and confirming that there were lots of killings in the said town. The senator noted that the situation is getting worse as he gathered information from one of the people who fled the town.

Boko Haram has been attacking numerous towns in northern-eastern Nigeria in the past months and people are speculating that the group is planning to advance towards the main city of Maiduguri. If they do attack this city, it would be catastrophic since there are over two million people living there, Zanna added.

The Borno senator is pleading for the government to send more troops to the main city since Boko Haram has been recruiting more and more people in their group from the villages they have seized.

Syria and Iraq are now being widely controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) rebels. They have declared a caliphate over the countries.

According to reports, the group Boko Haram has already set up a caliphate in the areas they have marked as their territory. However, it has not yet been verified if they are in alliance with ISIS militants.

Reports claim that the Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, has praised the ISIS militants for what they did in Iraq.
