(Photo : Reuters) Many gaming companies and individuals are buying .game domain names.
Uniregistry, an organization that administers generic top-level domains, has announced that it is releasing the content-specific extension .game. As the name suggests, the new domain extension is aimed at the gaming community.
Top gaming companies have already bought their own .game domain during Uniregistry's early trademark enrollment period. Major gaming company Blizzard Entertainment snagged a complete list of domain names for its popular video game titles like "StarCraft," "Diablo," "Hearthstone," "Warcraft," and "Heroes of the Storm." Additionally, the company was able to acquire the Overwatch.game domain just in time for the game's upcoming launch.

In a statement acquired by PC Mag, Uniregistry managing director Frank Schilling said, "We're excited to bring .game to the Internet. And we're especially pleased to see the early adoption of the name by the world's leading gaming companies."
Schilling added that the domain names that are related to gaming would give a category-defining business to Uniregistry, according to Pulse Headline.
It appears that the .game domain is getting a lot of attention not only to gaming companies. Tech giant Apple purchased a handful of domains also including iPad.game, AppleTV.game, and AppleWatch.game. Microsoft, on the other hand, picked Xbox.game, while Sony Interactive acquired PlayStation.game. Tech companies like EA and Nintendo had also picked their own domains.
People working in the gaming industry have also snatched their own domains. Georgia Van Cylenburg, a voice actor who has worked on titles like"Star Wars," "Final Fantasy," and "PayDay 2," acquired the voiceover.game domain. When accessed it redirects to her IMDb webpage.
Other video game-related domains have been already picked up as well. Domains like play.game, VR.game, board.game, mmorpg.game, chess, game, and tabletop.game are already taken. However, most of these domains are still not live.
While the purchase and registration of a .game domain is open to the public, Uniregistry said that the annual fee to maintain a certain domain name is $318.88.
