General Motors will introduce its first self-driving Cadillac in two years, said GM CEO Mary Barra.

She said this "Super Cruise" feature" will be available in a 2017 Cadillac model.

Super Cruise controls the vehicle's acceleration, braking and steering in stop-and-go traffic jams and highway speeds as fast as 70 miles per hour, Barra told her audience at the Intelligent Transport System World Congress in Michigan yesterday.

Barra, however, refused to divulge the official name of the Cadillac model that will have Super Cruise.

Barra added GM will improve its cars' on-road safety by building a model with "vehicle-to-vehicle technology" that lets it communicate with other cars equipped with the same capability.

She said the company will make the "V2V" feature standard in the 2017 Cadillac CTS sedan to hit the road in the latter half of 2016. While some Mercedes-Benz models have a similar technology that lets the car drive itself at lower speeds, GM's more advanced Super Cruise feature for the Cadillac blows Mercedes entirely out of the water.

"With Super Cruise, when there's a congestion alert on roads like California's Santa Monica Freeway, you can let the car take over and drive hands free and feet free through the worst stop-and-go traffic around," Barra said.

"If the mood strikes you on the high-speed road from Barstow, California, to Las Vegas, you can take a break from the wheel and pedals and let the car do the work. Having it done for you -- that's true luxury."
