AMD Wants to Regain Market Dominance With Radeon RX 480

(Photo : YouTube Screenshot) Earlier this month, a leaked "Ashes of the Singularity" benchmark slide surfaced, and many believed it to be that of the RX 490.

AMD is aggressively marketing its newest graphics cards using the new Polaris architecture to close the gap with some of its biggest competitors. AMD unveiled the Radeon RX 480 at Computex, and the company announced that it will hit the market on June 29.

Aside from groundbreaking performance, AMD surprised the tech community when it announced that the upcoming Radeon RX 480 will have a price tag of $199.

When Nvidia announced its GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 video cards, tech experts believe that AMD needs to launch an equally powerful hardware in order to stay in the market. Much to the surprise of the tech community, AMD has not only released an almost equally powerful graphics card, but it is half of the price of Nvidia's products.

The Radeon RX 480 is marketed for the mid-market sector and not at the top of the food chain. With this, many tech analysts claim that AMD is finally surrendering the lucrative high-end market to Nvidia and is instead focusing more on the mid-market sector.

Although the mid-market is not as high paying as the high-end market which is patronized by enthusiasts and hardcore overclockers, AMD is eyeing towards the high-volume segment.

Since the Radeon RX 480 is a relatively new product which is still unavailable in the market, its performance is still based on the benchmarks provided by AMD. According to AMD's presentation, the graphics card has a compute performance of more than five teraflops. With this performance, the RX 480 will sit somewhere in between the last-generation R9 390 and R9 390X.

Aside from upgraded compute performance, the new AMD Polaris architecture promises substantial power usage improvements as well as high memory bandwidths, according to The Motley Fool.

AMD has admitted that the Radeon RX 480 is not as powerful as the Nvidia GTX 1080. However, the GTX 1080 will have a price tag of $599 when it hits the market later this month. AMD claims that two Radeon RX 480 in Crossfire mode can beat the GTX 1080 in terms of performance, according to Fudzilla. Moreover, two Radeon RX 480 cards will cost less than $500, and they would doubtless beat the performance of the GTX 1080.
