The acquisition of Seene is the second purchase made by Snapchat this year. The company acquired Bitstrips in March. This Canadian startup creates emojis including Bitmoji, scheduled to be integrated with Snapchat's messaging services.

The latest acquisition is likely to give a fillip to Snapchat's rumored foray into virtual reality. The technology may also allow Snapchat users to create 3D selfies. According to TechCrunch, Seene's technology allows for the use of the rear camera for applying new functionality to 2D objects and render 3D image.

Snapchat has not released any official statement about the effects of the acquisition. The financial terms and conditions of the deal have also not been revealed.

Seene's technology does not depend on multiple cameras or special infrared sensors for creating 3D models. Also, instead of using cloud backend, the app uses phone's processor for this purpose. Seene currently operates out of London and San Francisco. However, post-acquisition, its team is likely to relocate to Los Angeles, where Snapchat is based.
