China posted an unexpected surge in its growth rate during the fourth quarter of the previous year. Surpassing official estimates of 6.5 percent growth, the country's economy experienced a 6.8 percent growth. However, risks related to debt and asset price inflation persist.

China’s July holding of US treasuries has been reported at the lowest level since 2013. Its holding has decreased for a fourth straight month. China is the biggest US creditor and the US government owes it $1.219 trillion of debt as in July. Japan held $1.155 trillion worth of Treasuries as it retained its position as the second-biggest holder of the bonds.
Canada Denies Making any Concession for Release of Citizen Detained in China

China recently released a Canadian citizen convicted of spying. He had been detained for two years. Now, Canada's Foreign Minister Stephane Dion has clarified that the country did not make any concession to China to secure the release. There had been rumors that China was seeking a free trade deal, the extradition of corrupt officials from Canada, and lax investment rules in return for the release.
Japan to Join US Military Exercise in the South China Sea

Japan and India have agreed to the sale of $1.6 billion worth of Shinmaywa US-2+ search and rescue aircraft. The sale would be made at a reduced rate to strengthen security ties between the countries.
