Two years after the release of the first Gear Fit smart wearable device, South Korean tech giant Samsung is rolling out its successor, the aptly named Gear Fit 2.

Many tech analysts are convinced that Samsung took the two-year hiatus to make sure no stone was left unturned while developin the Gear Fit 2. On the other hand, many are also skeptical whether it will be able topple the current leader in the market, the Fitbit.

The new Samsung Gear Fit 2 looks hauntingly familiar to its predecessor. It has a large color screen embedded on a silicon band. Unlike the first Gear Fit, the screen of the new wearable from Samsung curves in such a way that it sits comfortable on the wrist of the user.

While the new Gear Fit 2, with its 1.5-inch curved AMOLED screen, sports a smaller display that its predecessor, it has double the screen width, which allows users to see more on the tiny screen. Additionally, the wider screen allows for easy navigation compared to the slimmer and less sensitive displays embedded on most fitness trackers that are available in the market.

While the Gear Fit 2 is marketed as a fitness tracker, it does offer features that are more common to smartwatches. Users can now configure the device to receive notifications every time a new one pops up on their Android device. Notifications for calls, text messages, and calendar events can now be received on the new Gear Fit 2.

As for its fitness tracker specs, the Gear Fit 2 has a GPS sensor and a heart rate monitor, which is very useful for people who work out regularly. The display screen provides real-time data during work out routines without the need for the device to be synced to a smartphone app.

Powering the Gear Fit 2 is the Exynos 3250 processor with 512MB of RAM. IT has 4GB of storage space, which is ample enough to hold at least a hundred songs. As for its battery life, the fitness tracker should last at least three days on a single charge.

The Samsung Gear Fit 2 costs $180 and will be available for pre-order on June 3.
