Malaysia's current world No. 2, Lee Chong Wei has won his sixth Indonesia Open title, cementing his place in the sport's highest BWF rankings. Chong Wei beat Denmarks's Jan O. Jorgensen at the Istola Galera Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Sunday.

Chong Wei, 33, lost the first game and was on the brink of losing the championship match in the second set but managed to bounce back with a win forcing a deciding third set. The Malaysian badminton star dominated the final game and wrapped up the match with a thrilling 17-21, 21-19, 21-17 victory.

Chong Wei, who had been the tournament's winner in the years 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013, will be taking home cash prize worth US$67,500. Jorgensen, on the other hand, will receive US$34,200 as the runner-up.

The two-time Asian Championships winner became the first non-Indonesian badminton player to win the title in sixth occasions. He has tied the records of Indonesian legends Ardy Wiranata and Taufik Hidayat with the number of Indonesia Open titles won.

With the victory, Chong Wei has earned the maximum 11,000 points for emerging as the champion of the badminton competition. Chong Wei will transcend the two-time world champion Chen Long of China as the new world No. 1 when the BWF releases its newest ranking update on Thursday.

The Malaysian national held the world No.1 position from 2009 to 2014 before being suspended for eight months due to an anti-doping regulation violation.

"I'm really happy to win the title for the sixth time here in Indonesia. It's quite an achievement for me," Chong Wei, who got the spectators' support during the match, said. "I really have to thank the crowd for cheering for me. It made me feel like I was playing at home."
