Explorers Dive into an Active Volcano Crater with GoPro Cameras

Extreme explorer and documentary filmmaker George Kourounis and fellow daredevil Sam Cossman filmed their descent into the "hell" of the Marum crater of the active Ambrym volcano located in the South Pacific island of Vanuatu.

The Marum crater, also called Lava Lake, is filled with constantly churning, hot molten lava.

Using a GoPro wearable video camera; a Sony NX Cam and a Canon 5D still camera, the two adventurers documented their journey into what Kourounis described as a "window into hell."

Kourounis is the host of the television show, Angry Planet, and is renowned for a fondness for extreme adventures.

The duo were guided inside the Marum crater by Geoff Mackley, Brad Ambrose and Gareth Hawken, who are pioneers in volcano exploration.

Kouronis stunt wasn't as foolhardy as it appeared. To ensure their safety, the explorers first spent four days at the volcano before descending twice into the crater with their cameras.

For Kourounis, however, a slow day at the office means chasing tornadoes but he confirmed this qualified as one of his most extremes experiences.

He describes his personal experience at the lava lake as kind of like a reverse climb of Mt. Everest. Kourounis said the volcano fought back, and they had to deal with awful weather and massive, extreme heat from the lava.

They  descended and ascended 400 meters at a near vertical angle, coping with loose rocks and acid rain.

Amidst the extreme conditions, Kourounis got so close to the lava lake bits of lava burned holes into his clothing and part of one of the cameras.

Descending into the fiery Marum crater has been a dream of his for many years and it was truly exhilarating, to say the least, Kourounis told The Huffington Post.

Ambrym volcano is the most active volcanoes in Oceania. It's had 48 eruptions since 1774, 10 of these involving Marum crater.
