As part of the company's effort to curb hacking, Netflix has announced that it is resetting the password of users who also used the same password on their social media accounts like Myspace, LinkedIn, or Tumblr.
The three aforementioned websites were breached by hackers recently.
In a statement released by Netflix, the company said, "We believe your Netflix account credentials may have been included in a recent release of email addresses and password from an older breach at another company. Just to be safe, we've reset your password as a precautionary measure."

Netflix added that those who were affected by the password reset would be required to create a new password via Netflix.com. They can do so by clicking on the "Forgot your email or password" option.
A recent wave of hacking incidents have exposed sensitive user information from major social networking sites like Myspace, Tumblr, and LinkedIn. Netflix believes that the perpetrators will use the credentials acquired on those three websites to see if they can get a workaround to access other services.
Netflix is not the only one to send password resets to its users following the recent hacks. Last month, Reddit sent out password resets to at least 100,000 users. Reddit did it following an increase in account takeovers by "malicious third-parties" which were linked to the recent LinkedIn password dump.
Security researcher Brain Krebs believes that social networking giant Facebook will closely follow the steps taken by both Netflix and Reddit as part of its effort to protect its 1.2 billion users.
Last week, Myspace confirmed that it suffered a major data breach back in 2013. Myspace added that data stolen from its servers were now up for sale online. Myspace said that a Russian hacker known only as "Peace" was responsible for the breach. Peace is also the same hacker accused of the recent breaches of Tumblr and LinkedIn.
