Google has announced that it will add U.S. Cellular on their wireless service, joining both Sprint and T-Mobile’s network.
The additional coverage will be rolling out to all users in the coming weeks and will provide added consistency and speed. The company said that U.S. Cellular is one of the top mobile networks in the country and much smaller compared to the big four wireless carriers.

Project Fi was launched in April 2015 and Google’s attempt to shake up the wireless industry with cheaper plans. The service uses a combination of cellular coverage – from T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular – and local Wi-Fi networks. A key aspect of Project Fi is technology that determines which network offers the best connection, allowing it to seamlessly switch among networks if one connection weakens.
Project Fi uses special SIM cards and radios to work as a “network of networks.” Fi-compatible phones measure the available connections from participating cellular networks and switch to the fastest one on the fly. The downside is that you actually need a Fi-compatible phone and currently available on the Nexus 6, 5X, and 6P.
U.S. Cellular is currently available in 23 states with 4G LTE coverage for more than 99 percent of its subscribers. The biggest gains from this, judging from wireless carrier’s map, appear to be in parts of Oregon, Oklahoma, Nebraska, West Virginia, Texas, and Maine.
In most areas, multiple cellular networks are available — in fact, the majority of Project Fi usage occurs in areas where more than one of our partners offers LTE coverage. But factors like obstructions from nearby buildings can meaningfully impact the speed and coverage available from each LTE connection.
“By analyzing speeds from each network, Project Fi is able to predict the fastest network at your location — down to the city block — and automatically connect you. We’re constantly adapting to consider how factors like new cell towers and newly-available radio frequencies are impacting real-world speeds,” Google explains.
Fi’s plans start at $20 per month for unlimited domestic calls and texts, with an additional $10 per GB of data per month. The service does not require any annual contracts.
